If you were asked what the most widely consumed fruit in the world is, what would your answer be?  You may respond by saying apples, oranges or even bananas.  Well how about mangoes, yes mangoes are the most consumed fruit worldwide.  Mangoes are eaten diced, they are used in fresh salsas and also make great smoothies and frozen desserts.  April through May is a peak time of the season for delicious Mexican  mangoes.

There are many different types and varieties of mangoes grown around the world.  The best way to select that perfect mango is not so much the color of the skin, but the feel of the mango.  A mango should have a slight give to it when light pressure is applied.  Ripe mangoes will also have a fragrant fruity aroma at their stem ends.

There are many different ways to use a mango. A few of the ways are to dice them, use them in fresh salsas or blend them into fresh smoothies.  To prepare a mango is actually quite simple.  Mangoes have a thin pit that runs down the middle of the mango.  With a sharp knife, follow the pit down through the middle on both sides of the mango and this will leave you two nice halves of fruit.  Score both pieces of fruit in a checkerboard pattern and now it is ready to eat.  Either push the skin up from underneath and eat it directly off the skin or you can scrape off the fruit chunks with a spoon into a bowl or dish to be used in other ways.

There are many reasons why we should try to incorporate mangoes into our daily diets.  Mangoes can aid us in digestion, help lower cholesterol, promote good eyesight and even help us lose weight.  Mangoes have also been proven to help the mind focus and keep our memories sharp.  Mangoes have also been proven to be a key colon cancer preventer in both men and women.  This super food can be very important and vital in strengthening our immune systems too, which can lead us to a happy more enjoyable life.

So the next time you are in one of our Nino’s stores, pick up a mango or two, they’re a delicious and enjoyable snack for the whole family.  Here are a few recipe ideas for mangoes on our web site at
