I remember my mum cooking a roast of lamb for Sunday dinner and the delicious smell lingering all over the house. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it. When I think of lamb, there’s nothing better than a rich and oaky Tempranillo to pair with it.
Though, it is not considered the most popular grape here in the United States, it is closest in taste to a Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. Well, kind of. It’s got the deep color and rich flavor of the one plus the strawberry fruit of the other.
The Tempranillo grape is very popular in Spain, especially in the regions of Rioja, which can be blended with Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuela. Rioja is divided into three parts, and Rioja Alavesa produces the most delicate wine. Those from Rioja Alta are darker and richer than Rioja Baja, Garnacha takes over as the main grape, and the wines are frequently rather thick and full bodied. Wines of Ribera del Duero are richer and fuller and produce wines of good quality. Tempranillo is also grown in Australia, South America, Portugal and other parts of Spain.

Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez, Pesquera-Ribera del Duero
100% Tempranillo, one of the most hyped wines in Spain, features an excellent structure and balance with aromas of smoke, anise and bitter cherry. On the palate, you’ll note red berries and candied cherry with a smooth finish.
Bodegas Lan Rioja Reserva
This wine is smooth and supple with notes of vanilla and spice with red fruits. It’s made from the old vines located in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa.
